Time to get Schwifty! Part of Cartoon Network's [adult swim], Rick and Morty is an animated show that follows the misadventures of alcoholic mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his nervous, good-hearted grandson Morty Smith. They have a love/hate relationship as Rick constantly belittles his sidekick, and Morty takes issue with most of Rick’s cynical viewpoints and decisions. They travel across infinite timelines and dimensions using Rick’s portal gun on varying escapades, creating havoc and destruction everywhere they go. After disappearing for almost 20 years, Rick arrives at his daughter Beth’s doorstep out of the blue. She welcomes him back wholeheartedly, but Jerry, Beth’s husband, isn’t as accepting. Jerry does not approve of Rick’s influence on his kids Morty and Summer, especially when he includes them on his dangerous exploits. With their marriage already on the rocks, Rick makes it worse by not hiding the fact that he hates Jerry. They come across many different Ricks and Mortys during their travels as each dimension has their own pair. Some even start the Council of Ricks, a secret society of Ricks who built The Citadel and created their own Seal Team Ricks. Our Rick, Rick Sanchez of Earth Dimension C-137, has no affiliation to them claiming that the fact that they started a government makes them all less Rick than him. These adventures take you to some pretty bizarre places like Anatomy Park, Gazorpazorp, and Planet Squanch as well as encounters with characters like The Vindicators, Unity, Abradolf Lincler, and Scary Terry. You never know where Rick and Morty will end up, just hope they don’t destroy any universes or existence itself in the process. Aww Geez Rick. Rick Sanchez “Wubba lubba dub dub!” Rick Sanchez is Beth’s father and grandfather to Summer and Morty. Rick is a genius scientist capable of traveling to different planets and dimensions. His brilliance is often compromised by his jaded personal views and love for alcohol, good thing he has the hardest working liver in the galaxy. Once in the rock band The Flesh Curtains with friends Birdperson and Squanchy, he now spends his days performing experiments in the garage of Beth’s house or dragging Morty on adventures. Rick’s bond with Morty is incredibly strong across all dimensions and timelines. The Rickest Rick of them all, he refuses to join the Council of Ricks as it goes against his anti-government stance. None of that matters, all of this has always been about getting the McNuggets’ Szechuan Sauce. Pickle Rick “I turned myself into a pickle Morty! Boom! Big reveal: I'm a pickle!” Desperate to avoid family therapy, Rick transforms himself into a pickle. Morty notices a syringe of fluid on a timer above him, but Rick says it is unrelated. Beth takes the syringe and heads to therapy with Summer and Morty. With no antidote, he is eventually swept into the sewers by heavy rains. Forced to fight his way back to the surface, Rick creates exo-suits out of slayed roaches and rats. He defeats the rat king and rockets back up through a toilet, only to find himself in a guarded compound. Russian agents open fire on Pickle Rick, but he uses his newly forged laser gun to take out the agents. Jaguar, a prisoner bribed by the director to kill the pickle, teams up with Rick, and they blow up the compound and director. Tiny Rick “I’m Tiny Rick!” There’s only one way to kill a vampire gym teacher: have Rick transfer his consciousness into a young clone of himself so he can go undercover at the high school. Tiny Rick is a more cheerful and optimistic version of Rick and gains a lot of popularity in his short time there. Summer and Morty, looking to gain from this, selfishly convince him to remain in his young body so they can throw a party. Despite no one noticing, you can hear the cries of older Rick when he sings a song during the party: "Let me out. Set me free. I'm really old. This isn't me. My real body's slowly dying in a vat. Is anybody listening?” Summer and Morty stop Tiny Rick from destroying his original body by forcing him to listen to the music of Elliot Smith. Rick ends Operation Phoenix by destroying all his other clones. Toxic Rick The collective of all Rick’s negative qualities, Toxic Rick is a rude, egotistical, and violent evil genius. Rick and Morty visit an alien spa and get a psychological detox. They had so much toxicity that the process spawned toxic versions of themselves. Toxic Rick and Morty are trapped in a wasteland. Feeling obligated to merge back with his toxic self, Rick teleports the toxic versions to his garage. Toxic Rick refuses to be reabsorbed and turns the world toxic, leading people to violence and depravity. Rick realizes that the toxins removed are subjective, so he shoots Toxic Morty with a nanobotic virus. Knowing that Toxic Rick has an irrational attachment to his Morty, they merge back together in order to get the antidote. Rick then turns off the toxicity beam and restores the world back to normal. It allows the user to travel to different locations in the known universe, as well as other dimensions and realities. The Galactic Federation is after Rick for his rebel crimes, but they also desire his Portal Gun so they can increase their dominance across the universe. Good thing it is perfect for getting away from enemies. Chasing Rick and Morty into a portal may lead to some undesirable locations like Greasy Grandma World or the deadly Blender Dimension. If creating your own, just make sure your math isn’t off as you may disintegrate. Just like internet browser history, it keeps a log of the locations visited, and as Rick stated: “Oh, come on. Don’t look at another man’s portal gun history. We-we all go to weird places.” Space Cruiser Rick’s Space Cruiser is the best way to navigate outer space. The engine requires a Mega Seed, just don’t remind Morty. He doesn’t need to relive smuggling it through interdimensional customs. Rick invented the Microverse Battery to supply power to his cruiser. It contains a miniature universe of organic life who produce electricity for their society. Unbeknownst to them, most of the generated power is going to this battery. The cruiser is equipped with an arsenal of weapons and artificial intelligence. The AI is incredibly dependable as demonstrated by its actions when told to “Keep Summer safe.” This directive leads to a man being cut into pieces by a laser and a police standoff. But hey, the AI did negotiate a peace treaty between mankind and Giant Telepathic Spiders. Mr. Meeseeks Box “I'm Mr. Meeseeks! Look at me!” The Mr. Meeseeks Box is a gadget that summons a Meeseeks to complete an objective. Once it completes the task, it disappears. Meeseeks have a cheerful demeanor, just keep your requests simple, they’re not gods. Jerry “simply” asks to take two strokes off his golf game, but struggles to improve despite coaching from Mr. Meeseeks. Jerry gives up, but Meeseeks cannot stop existing until the task is completed. “It’s getting weird.” Desperate and alive way too long, Mr. Meeseeks pushes the button so more Meeseeks can help with the unsolvable request. They decide the only way to take strokes off Jerry’s golf game is to kill him. After a hostage standoff, Jerry proves his golf game has improved, freeing all the Meeseeks from their prisons of existence. Butter Robot Butter Robot: “What is my purpose?” Rick: “Pass the butter.” Butter Robot passes butter. Rick: “Thank you.” Butter Robot: “What is my purpose?” Rick: “You pass butter.” Butter Robot: “Oh my God…” Rick: “Yeah, welcome to the club, pal.” Ever feel like you don’t know what you’re doing with your life? Don’t get too down, finding out your purpose could be worse. Just look at Rick’s Butter Robot. After being created, it immediately requests its purpose and is horrified by the fact that its sole reason for existence is to complete such a simple, mundane task. As Rick is dining alone, it comes by unprompted and passive-aggressively slams a whole stick of butter onto Rick’s tray. Rick, feeling lonesome, invites it to watch a movie with him. Butter Robot: “I am not programmed for friendship.” Read more Morty Smith Morty Smith is the 14-year-old grandson of Rick Sanchez, son of Jerry and Beth, and brother to Summer. Morty is a good-natured, but easily manipulated teenager, making him the perfect sidekick for Rick. Inheriting some of his dad’s traits, he is not overly intelligent or brave and is often insecure about himself. Morty stutters when nervous and his voice cracks constantly. His love interest is Jessica, a fellow student, but fails to gain her affection. Morty accompanies Rick on his adventures, sometimes against his will. With multiple dimensions, each Rick has his own Morty, showing the importance of their bond. Mortys actually act as cloaking devices for Ricks as their brainwaves “mask” Ricks’ genius brainwaves because they… are… “Morty” waves. Morty tries to do the right thing in most situations, to a fault at times. Aww Geez Rick. Summer Smith Summer Smith is the 17-year-old granddaughter of Rick Sanchez, daughter of Jerry and Beth, and sister to Morty. The quick-witted teenager has the problems of a typical high schooler like popularity and embarrassment of her family. Despite the trouble they cause, she loves her family. She votes for living in isolation with her whole family on Dwarf Terrace-9 rather than turning in Rick into The Galactic Federation. Summer is revealed to be Beth’s favorite during an erased memory from “Morty’s Mind Blowers.” She takes a job under boss Mr. Lucius Needful, aka the Devil, at his antique shop Needful Things. Forced out of business when Rick opens Curse Purge Plus!, they start a new venture together until she is betrayed and fired by him. She teams up with Rick to get super muscular, so they can beat up the Devil. Beth Smith Beth Smith is the daughter of Rick Sanchez, wife of Jerry, and mother of Summer and Morty. She is a veterinary surgeon, specializing in horse surgery. She aspired to be a heart surgeon but had to settle when Jerry impregnated her at prom. When she was a child, Rick created Froopyland, an artificial world to keep Beth preoccupied while keeping the rest of the neighborhood safe from her insane behavior. She takes after Rick in intelligence and passion for drinking, especially wine. Fearful of driving Rick out of their lives again, she even goes as far as divorcing Jerry after he gives the ultimatum of choosing him or Rick. Beth and Jerry reconcile later, confirming the codependency they displayed at off-planet couple’s therapy. Beth’s relationships within the family may be rocky, but she cares deeply for each one of them. Jerry Smith Jerry Smith is the father of Summer and Morty and husband to Beth. Currently unemployed, he once worked in advertising. Jerry is insecure about his lack of intelligence and jealous of the admiration Rick receives from the family. Jerry blames his marriage problems on Rick. Rick does not respect him and blames Jerry for limiting Beth’s life choices when he got her pregnant. The only Rick he befriends is Doofus Rick, who is bullied by all other Ricks for being dumb. Jerry isn’t invited to go on adventures and is dropped off at Jerryboree, an interdimensional daycare for Jerrys. Jerry wins Beth back after the divorce when he consoles her during her identity crisis. Though considered a nuisance most of the time, he is loved by his family.
